Create A Himmeli!
Himmeli (heaven/sky) were originally created in Finland, Norway, Sweden and Estonia, and functioned as good luck charm that were hung from the ceiling in homes to ensure good crops and fertility of the fields. Today, people are reviving this tradition using new materials! Students will gain insights into this Nordic art connection in Minnesota, learn about the history of these traditional art forms, and explore folk arts to promote cross cultural understanding and community building. Professor Alison Aune and UMD Art Education students will lead the class!
