5 String Banjo: Intermediate
Music

Instructor: Eileen Sugars For those wishing to continue their banjo journey, we will start transitioning into the “soft skills “ of learning to play by ear, improvising in different keys, playing in a group, and basic music theory. Students should have basic 5-string skills and be able to play some tunes from memory.

Beginning Steel Band
Music

Instructor: Jeremy Craycraft Learn a new instrument, the “pan,” in this entry-level steel drum band. This Caribbean ensemble is composed of multiple steel drum voices and has eleven spots total (not including drum set and electric bass if anyone is interested in joining us). We will meet at the College of St. Scholastica, Tower Hall, room 3625. This band is designed for those with no, or limited, musical experience—on any instrument or voice. It introduces the historical and cultural context of the steel drum, and music learning is accomplished through a mix of basic notation and rote memorization. The ensemble uses folk melodies, easy pop hits, and pan-Caribbean party music as an entry point.

Duluth Symphonic Winds / Community Band

Instructor: Tracey Gibbens and Brian Langlee Dust off your old instrument and join up with a great collection of players performing fun and interesting pieces. This long-standing Duluth group welcomes all new members who can sight-read music, and provide their own instruments. Come ready for upcoming concert dates. No solos or auditions required. Trumpets and trombones are especially wanted! No class October 14, November 11

Duluth Civic Orchestra

Instructor: Brandon Smith Play a varied repertoire for the joy of it with a congenial group of musicians. We welcome anyone who plays standard symphony orchestra instruments (within the confines of balanced instrumentation). No auditions required, and no age restrictions, but you must be able to sight-read music, have your own instrument, and play at the high school level. Regular concerts in the area. No class 5/14. Thursday 5/16 will be the make up day.
