About Early Childhood Family Education

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) recognizes that parents are their child’s first and most important teachers. ECFE offers parents hands-on learning experiences and parenting discussions that will nourish a lifetime of teachable moments. ALL families are welcome.

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) classes meet once a week. We offer classes at various times and at 4 different locations across Duluth. Together, parents and children, participate in activities and experiences that foster children’s social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and language skills. All ECFE classes are taught by licensed early childhood teachers and parent educators to provide the quality education parents are looking for. ECFE teachers use the Parent Education Core Curriculum Framework and Early Childhood Indicators of Progress: Minnesota’s Early Learning Standards provided through the Minnesota Department of Education.

Parent/Infant classes include parent-and-baby activity time, parent discussion time, and time to connect with other parents. Parent/Infant classes are non-separating classes.

Circle of Security

The Circle of Security Parenting Program is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strengthened. The sessions are practical skills-based, using video clips, discussion, and handouts to explore children's emotional needs and build parents' ability to respond sensitively to those needs. You will learn to: Understand your child's emotional world by learning to read the emotional needs Support your child's ability to successfully manage emotions Enhance the development of your child's esteem Each adult attending must register. If childcare is needed, register the child for sibling care. Children 3 months of age or older must be registered for sibling care if you plan to bring them to class.

Early Childhood Family Education

Mixed Ages classes are a great opportunity for families with more than one child to be able to experience ECFE. Classes start with parent-child activity time. Parents and children play and learn together in a safe and educational environment. During the Parent Ed time, children stay with the early childhood teacher and staff. This is an opportunity for children to play with peers and enjoy activities in all areas of development. Parents attend a discussion group led by a Parent Educator. The parent group includes information on developmental, age-related concerns and allows time to get to know other parents. Sibling care available - registration required.
