Instructor: Lea Makinen Explore the delights of watercolor basics with a variety of detailed techniques to draw and paint beautiful pictures of animals and birds from the Northland. The instructor will guide you step-by-step to achieve the best results. This is a fun, creative, and interesting class! You will have two exciting pictures to show your friends and family. A downloadable reference picture will be sent to you prior to the first class. This class will be conducted via Zoom. No class 2/16. Supplies needed: Palette (Good art supply stores include the UMD Bookstore, where you can purchase a professional quality palette with a lid and high quality brushes) Plastic Watercolor Palette (9-10 wells or more) Brushes Short handled watercolor brushes Rounds--1, 1/16" wide Filberts--1, 3/8" wide pick two of these three 5/32", 5/8" or 1/4" Flat--1" wide Angle brush--(optional)--(small--1/4" wide, or less) Paper 1-2 pads of Watercolor Paper in a size like 9x12, 11x14, 11x15, 12x15, 12x16, or 12x18 depending on availability. 120 lb. paper or higher (Arches is best) Paints Watercolor paints-student grade (Like student grade: Winsor Newton's Cotman and Grumbacher Academy are best--or you could buy higher quality paints such as Winsor Newton or Daniel Smith for a more professional result. A set of paints is often the least expensive option. Colors: Pthalo Green Pthalo Blue Ultramarine Blue Dioxazine Purple Titanium White (2) Mars Black (or Ivory Black) Magenta or Rose Yellow Medium (For Yellows, Oranges, and Reds, (Hansa, Acra, or Cadmium Hue is fine too) Yellow Light (for Yellows, Oranges, and Reds, (Hansa, Acra, or Cadmium Hue is fine too) Orange Medium (For Yellows, Oranges, and Reds, (Hansa, Acra, or Cadmium Hue is fine too) Optional: Burnt Sienna Burnt Umber Yellow Ochre Miscellaneous: Water Jars: Like PB&J, Yogurt, Cottage Cheese, etc. (glass or plastic) Paper Towels 2b or hb pencil white vinyl eraser (or pink pearl) Sharpener (preferably with shavings catcher) Optional: (We probably won't need these right away) Sponge Plastic Wrap or plastic bag Aluminum Foil "Liquid Frisket"
