Beginning Steel Band

Learn a new instrument, the “pan,” in this entry-level steel drum band. This Caribbean ensemble is composed of multiple steel drum voices and has eleven spots total (not including drum set and electric bass if anyone is interested in joining us). We will meet at the College of St. Scholastica, Tower Hall, room 3625.

This band is designed for those with no, or limited, musical experience—on any instrument or voice. It introduces the historical and cultural context of the steel drum, and music learning is accomplished through a mix of basic notation and rote memorization. The ensemble uses folk melodies, easy pop hits, and pan-Caribbean party music as an entry point.
